Application of Micro-Infusion Catheters
The Micro-Infusion Catheter is comprised of a catheter tipped with a balloon-sheathed microneedle, and is guided and inflated in a manner similar to an angioplasty catheter, but with far lower expansion pressures, in vessels of 2.5 mm to 7 mm in diameter. It is compatible with 0.014” guide wires and 6Fr introducer sheaths, which are used in adjunctive endovascular procedures. The closed balloon provides a protective covering for a tiny injection needle as it is guided safely through the vasculature. When the desired injection site is reached, the balloon is inflated with saline, securing the system for injection and sliding the microneedle through the vessel wall.
The Micro-Infusion Catheter has been used to inject drugs, genes, and cells without material loss in viability or potency. The Micro-Infusion Catheter has received 510(k) marketing clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to deliver therapeutics previously approved for injection into vessel walls or perivascular tissue.
